To the northwest of Malta is Mellieha, a rural tourist resort. Early settlements go as far back as the early Neolithic era (3000 BC). One can still find some megalithic remains and graves from that period. Mellieha In the late 17th century the Order of St. John built fortresses along the coast. Today Mellieha is one of the most picturesque tourist village in Malta. There are good hotels and restaurants, bars and shops. There is a primary school, a majestic baroque church built at the end of the 19th century and different cultural organisations like music and sports clubs, an orchestra and different religious organisations. Mellieha’s main religious festivities are held during the first two weeks of September and reach their climax on the 8th of September. The largest sandy beach in Malta is Ghadira Bay in Mellieha.
